Yearly sports games have become the norm. With a set of sweeping regulation changes coming to Formula 1 this year, the expectation had been that F1 26 would be one of the biggest video game releases of 2026.
Instead, in a unique move, EA Sports has confirmed that F1 25—which arrived on all major platforms last year—will represent both the 2025 and 2026 FIA Formula One World Championships. In 2027, the series will return for "the start of a new and more expansive F1 experience."
An upcoming paid expansion (a release date and price have yet to be revealed) will bring players closer to the sport's major changes for 2026, which include new cars, sporting regulations, teams, and drivers.
According to EA, the decision to offer a premium content update for F1 25 is part of a strategic reset for the F1 gaming franchise. In 2027, a new game will be released that "looks, feels, and plays differently, delivering more gameplay choices." Details on what that means are scarce, but it sounds like we can expect a full-blown reinvention.
Lee Mather, Senior Creative Director at Codemasters, has said, "F1 25 has been an incredible success, fueled by the passion of fans and the energy of the sport. With Formula 1's momentum on and off the track, now is the perfect time for us to look ahead and build for the future."
"We're fully committed to the EA Sports F1 franchise," he continued. "Our multi-year plan extends this year's excitement with the 2026 expansion and reimagines the F1 experience for 2027 to deliver even more for players at every level around the world."
Working in partnership with F1 and all eleven teams, the 2027 F1 game will deliver a refreshed experience that expands on what longtime players have loved from the franchise, whilst simultaneously celebrating the excitement of Formula 1 in new ways, immersing new and existing players in the modern era of the sport.
F1 25 is available across PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. Right now, players can get involved in Season 4, featuring a new Survival Challenge mode with time-limited unlockables that include special liveries and helmets that are featured in the real-world season.
Developed by Codemasters, F1 25 lets players take the spotlight in the latest instalment of the fan-favourite story mode, Braking Point, become the Team Owner in the revamped My Team, or, for those with the Chapter Scenarios content, get behind the virtual wheel of the APXGP team car through a series of gameplay scenarios inspired by F1: The Movie.
