George Russell secured pole position for the Azerbaijan Grand Prix after an undeniably impressive Qualifying performance in Baku. Championship leader Kimi Antonelli, however, endured a nightmare session, which means he'll now start deep in the field.
Russell had looked strong throughout the weekend and delivered when it mattered most, setting a 1:42.526 in Q3 to beat Ferrari's Charles Leclerc by 0.837 seconds. Oscar Piastri completed the front row, finishing just 0.001 seconds behind Leclerc.
The Mercedes driver's performance was particularly impressive given how close the field had looked during Friday morning's final practice session. Max Verstappen had topped FP3 for Red Bull, but Russell found considerably more pace when qualifying got underway.
Leclerc's second-place finish represents a strong result for Ferrari, while Piastri put McLaren on the front row despite the team struggling for outright pace earlier in the weekend.
Isack Hadjar produced one of the session's biggest surprises by qualifying fourth for Red Bull. The Frenchman, who returned to the cockpit in Baku after missing the previous three race weekends with a wrist injury, comfortably outqualified teammate Verstappen. He starts eighth, a result of the Dutchman having to slow down during a Yellow Flag in his final run.
Lando Norris will start fifth ahead of Lewis Hamilton, with Pierre Gasly taking an impressive seventh for Alpine. Carlos Sainz will start ninth for Williams, with Franco Colapinto completing the top ten for Alpine.
The biggest shock of qualifying, however, came in Q1 when Antonelli crashed into the barriers at Turn 1. The championship leader lost control and hit the wall, damaging the front-left of his Mercedes and ending his session. Antonelli will start Saturday's race from 16th, while Russell now has the opportunity to take a significant chunk out of his teammate's 81-point championship advantage.
Back to Verstappen, and it looked like he was a real contender for pole position until bad luck struck. After the session, the clearly frustrated four-time World Champion addressed the difficulties he'd been having with the car:
"The whole qualifying, the engine didn't work. We made an adjustment to the car, which also wasn't completely positive. Compared to my teammate, I was already half a second short on the straights. And then in Q3 you want to push in the middle lap, suddenly the battery wasn't full, doesn't charge, doesn't work, and then they tell me: you have to push with half a battery. I say, yeah, f*** off. I was really completely done with it. You prepare so well for the whole weekend, the car is going well, and then everything falls apart in qualifying; there is nothing you can do about that anymore."
"After that lap that I had to abort because the battery was only half full, the tyres cooled down too much, you can't push because it doesn't work, so you can't get enough temperature into those tyres. So also in that final lap just not the right grip, and the same problem with the engine, the engine braking which is very strange; it's as if you sometimes pull the handbrake in certain corners. So yeah, something is seriously wrong, yeah."
