Max Verstappen claimed his first victory of the 2026 Formula 1 season after rain fell at the Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia. George Russell, meanwhile, suffered a devastating late retirement, and Lewis Hamilton produced a remarkable comeback to secure a podium finish.
The race at Sepang International Circuit was delayed by more than 90 minutes due to heavy rain, with treacherous conditions creating a strategic headache for teams before the lights finally went out.
Verstappen started from pole position but immediately lost ground to Mercedes duo Kimi Antonelli and Russell. However, the Red Bull driver quickly recovered, overtaking Russell before reclaiming the lead from Antonelli following an early Safety Car period.
With the intermediate tyres giving way to slicks, the changing conditions provided plenty of overtaking opportunities. Verstappen ultimately proved untouchable once he returned to the front, managing the gap to Antonelli through the closing stages to secure a crucial 25 points.
Russell, meanwhile, endured another crushing blow in his battle with Mercedes teammate Antonelli for the Drivers' Championship. Running third and seemingly on course for a valuable podium finish, the Briton suffered a suspected power unit failure with just five laps remaining.
His retirement leaves Antonelli with an enormous 84-point championship advantage, dealing a potentially decisive blow to Russell's title ambitions.
Hamilton's third-place finish was arguably one of the day's most impressive achievements. Starting second, the Ferrari driver gambled on slick tyres in the damp conditions and plummeted down the order to 18th. However, the seven-time World Champion refused to give up, gradually working his way through the field before overtaking Red Bull's Isack Hadjar late in the race to secure third.
Verstappen's breakthrough victory provides Red Bull with a much-needed boost, and while the Championship is inevitably heading Antonelli's way, this may well be the start of the Dutchman's quest to claim his fifth title in the 2027 Formula 1 season.
Next up is the Singapore Grand Prix, which takes place next weekend with both a Sprint and feature race.
