George Russell picked up another win during the 2026 Formula 1 season by converting the Sprint pole into victory at the Canadian Grand Prix, but the biggest talking point in Montreal was the increasingly tense battle between the Mercedes teammates.
Russell held off championship leader Kimi Antonelli in a frantic opening phase before surviving late pressure from Lando Norris to claim an important Sprint victory at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve. However, the result only tells part of the story after several aggressive moments between the two Silver Arrows threatened to boil over into disaster.
Mercedes arrived in Canada with a heavily upgraded W17 and immediately looked like the team to beat. Antonelli topped the weekend’s only practice session before Russell narrowly edged the Italian teenager to Sprint pole by just 0.068 seconds. That set the stage for what quickly became the fiercest intra-team fight of the season.
Russell made a clean launch from pole position when the lights went out, but Antonelli remained glued to the back of the sister Mercedes through the opening laps. The pair rapidly pulled away from the McLarens behind, with Norris unable to initially match the pace of the leading duo.
The defining moment came during a dramatic scrap into Turn 1 when Antonelli attempted to attack around the outside of Russell. The two Mercedes drivers ran wheel-to-wheel, with Antonelli forced off the circuit as he tried to complete the move. The Italian was furious over team radio and believed Russell deserved a penalty, but the stewards opted against taking action.
That moment proved costly for Antonelli because Norris immediately capitalised on the chaos to move into second place. While Antonelli recovered to reclaim momentum later in the Sprint, he spent the remainder of the race trapped behind the McLaren.
Norris stayed within striking distance during the closing laps while Antonelli repeatedly looked for an opportunity to reclaim second, even running wide again during an aggressive attempt around the outside at Turn 1.
The tension inside Mercedes became even more obvious when team principal Toto Wolff intervened on team radio to tell Antonelli to stop "moaning" and focus on driving. Even after the chequered flag, Antonelli continued voicing frustration about Russell forcing him off the track.
Despite the controversy, Russell secured a crucial Sprint victory that has cut Antonelli’s lead in the Drivers’ Championship to 18 points. It also marked a timely response after Antonelli had won the previous three Grands Prix.
Behind the leading trio, Oscar Piastri recovered to fourth for McLaren ahead of Ferrari duo Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton. Max Verstappen endured another difficult session in seventh, while Racing Bulls rookie Arvid Lindblad claimed the final Sprint point in eighth after another impressive display.
With qualifying and the Grand Prix still to come, the atmosphere inside Mercedes has suddenly become one of the biggest stories of the weekend.
