Kimi Antonelli strengthened his grip on the 2026 Formula 1 World Championship with a commanding victory in Sunday's Belgian Grand Prix at Spa-Francorchamps. Now 50 points ahead at the top of the standings, a good day for Antonelli proved disastrous for his Mercedes teammate George Russell, who crashed out on the opening lap.

Starting from pole position, Antonelli looked in control throughout much of the race, but it was by no means an easy victory. Ferrari's Charles Leclerc briefly emerged as the leader thanks to a well-timed Virtual Safety Car period and sharp strategy, forcing the young Italian to fight back in the closing stages. Antonelli eventually reclaimed the lead with a decisive overtake to secure his sixth victory of the season.

Russell, who entered the weekend as Antonelli's closest championship challenger, saw his afternoon come to an abrupt end following contact with Lewis Hamilton. The Mercedes driver was pitched into the gravel and left unable to continue, handing Antonelli a golden opportunity to stretch his championship advantage. Hamilton was later handed a five-second penalty for causing the collision but still finished fourth.

Behind Antonelli, Leclerc delivered another impressive performance for Ferrari to secure second place, finishing less than two seconds adrift after pushing the Mercedes driver until the closing laps. Max Verstappen completed the podium for Red Bull, adding another trophy to his collection while also delivering the team's 300th Formula 1 podium finish.

McLaren endured a relatively quiet afternoon compared to their rivals at the front. Oscar Piastri crossed the line in fifth after running solidly throughout the race, but he was never quite able to challenge the podium contenders. Teammate Lando Norris recovered from thirteenth (a result of a 10-place grid penalty for an engine change) to finish seventh, salvaging useful championship points despite lacking the pace needed to mount a charge toward the front.

Elsewhere, Isack Hadjar continued his impressive campaign with sixth place for Red Bull—he started last after an engine change—while Gabriel Bortoleto claimed eighth for Audi. Racing Bulls youngster Arvid Lindblad impressed once again by finishing ninth, with Franco Colapinto rounding out the top 10 for Alpine.

For Mercedes, however, it was all about Antonelli. Not only did the Italian bounce back from Leclerc's strategic challenge, but he also capitalised on Russell's misfortune to significantly strengthen his championship position heading into the second half of the season.

With momentum firmly on his side and another flawless drive under his belt, 19-year-old Antonelli leaves Spa looking increasingly like the man to beat in the 2026 Formula 1 title race.
